SUMMARY:Dick Richards - 'The Road to Peace is Paved with Headstones’. An Introduction to The Commonwealth War Graves Commission
DESCRIPTION:Dick in the last eight years has become a volunteer with The Commission and as an approved speaker delivers talks to local community groups\, history associations and schools. He is also a guide at his local CWGC cemetery at Botley in Oxford. \nAs we commemorate the many anniversaries of The Great War and The Second World War there has been much focus on remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This talk highlights the role played by those far-sighted men and women who established an organisation\, now known as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission\, so that remembrance of their sacrifice will endure in perpetuity. We will look at the architectural and physical characteristics of the cemeteries and memorials as well as the underlying principles that govern their design. \nIn addition\, we will have an introduction to the Commission’s presence in Oxfordshire and the surrounding area.

She went to school in Oxford and was married to the dashing baronet\, Sir George Young\, in Christ Church Cathedral. Aurelia was introduced to life in politics when she was elected on to the Lambeth Council in her early twenties. \nGeorge Young was Member of Parliament for over forty years and now sits in the House of Lords. Aurelia will give an illustrated a talk about her life in politics which was sometimes challenging but never dull.

DESCRIPTION:Following a career in architecture and social housing in Birmingham\, Spain and Bristol\, in 2004 Paul graduated with an MA in Documentary Photography. He has developed an extensive and diverse portfolio which reflects his travels to many interesting countries as well as his fascination with life across the UK and in his adopted city of Oxford. \nDuring this talk Paul will show and discuss examples of his portrait photography\, starting with work made during a journey across Ethiopia in 2020\, just before the pandemic ended foreign travel. SUMMARY:Liz Wooley - Felicia Skene: Oxford Writer\, Prison Reformer and Friend to the Poor
DESCRIPTION:  \nLiz Woolley lives in Oxford and has an MSc in English Local History from the University Department for Continuing Education. She is particularly interested in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and in the lives of ordinary working citizens in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \nFelicia Skene was considered by many in Victorian Oxford to be a ‘local saint’. She devoted herself to improving the lives of the poor\, particularly in St Thomas’s\, one of the most deprived areas of the city. Skene rescued tramps and vagrants from their ’eminently unsatisfactory existence’ and girls from prostitution. The first woman in England to be officially appointed as a prison visitor\, she was a tireless advocate for prison reform\, both in the practical help she gave to inmates in Oxford’s gaols\, and through her prodigious writing. \n

SUMMARY:Matt Eade - Introducing Papua New Guinea
DESCRIPTION:Matt grew up in East Sussex and was introduced to the natural world at the age of seven when he set out to learn about birds and then butterflies\, dragonflies and orchids\, these being his main interests. Since 2011 when Matt went on his first birding trip to South Africa\, he has travelled to all seven continents and is soon to embark on an expedition from New Zealand to Japan\, with many remote islands in-between. \nPapua New Guinea is home to many hidden wildlife secrets\, especially\, Birds of Paradise\, which live in some very remote regions. Matt will talk about his 2019 expedition when he spent a month venturing to all corners of the country in search of its hidden gems\, to areas rarely visited by western travellers.

DESCRIPTION:Tom Brown grew up in south London in an unconventionally musical household\, where visitors included living classical composers Richard Rodney Bennett and Humphrey Searle. His mother\, Rosemary Brown\, claimed to be a musical medium in touch with dead composers. He graduated from Jesus College\, Oxford with a degree in Modern Languages in 1979 and spent his working life in financial services\, but has been opera-going for 50 years in four continents\, having seen his first Britten performances in 1975. \nThe aim of this talk is to provide an insight into the operatic works of Benjamin Britten\, with recorded extracts from stage or recorded performances (prospectively Peter Grimes\, Billy Budd\, Gloriana\, the War Requiem and Death in Venice) \n

SUMMARY:Mark Davies - Artists in Wonderland: Pre-Raphaelite Adventures in Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Mark Davies is an Oxford local historian\, guide\, and author with a particular interest in the non-University aspects of the city’s past. Mark’s relevant publications are Alice in Waterland\, Alice’s Oxford on Foot\, and A Towpath Walk in Oxford\, and he also provided the text for Jericho\, Oxford\, published late in 2022. He is a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society and Chair of the Jericho Living Heritage Trust. \nThe Pre-Raphaelite association with Oxford\, and especially Jericho\, has several overlaps with one of his principal local interests\, namely the Oxford realities which underlie Lewis Carroll’s Alice\, hence the talk title of ‘Artists in Wonderland’. Carroll came to befriend the Pre-Raphaelites largely through his skill as a photographer. \n

SUMMARY:Martin Buckland - The Wilts and Berks Canal – Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:The canal opened in 1810 after 15 years of construction but had a chequered career until its legal closure in 1914. In 1977 restoration of the canal began in a few places but in 2004 full restoration of the entire 62 miles was decided upon. DESCRIPTION:Dr Vlad Mykhnenko was born and raised in the city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. He gained his undergraduate qualifications in Ukraine and Hungary\, before moving to Darwin College\, Cambridge for his doctorate. He has taught in several universities in the UK and has published widely. He is currently associate Professor of Sustainable Urban Development and Research Fellow at St Peter’s College\, Oxford.
