SUMMARY:Martin Buckland - The Wilts and Berks Canal – Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:The canal opened in 1810 after 15 years of construction but had a chequered career until its legal closure in 1914. In 1977 restoration of the canal began in a few places but in 2004 full restoration of the entire 62 miles was decided upon. DESCRIPTION:Edward Clarke is a poet who teaches English literature and art history at various colleges including Oxford’s Department for Continuing Education. He is the author of Eighteen Psalms (2018) and A Book of Psalms (2020)\, as well as books on literary criticism\, and presented a documentary\, ‘Clarke’s Psalter’ on Radio 4 about writing his psalm poems. SUMMARY:Michael Bloom - The History\, Land and People of Georgia
DESCRIPTION:Michael Bloom has been studying the Georgian polyphonic singing tradition since 1994 and co-founded a choir in London in 1999 to sing these songs. Through the choir he met his Georgian wife Eliso which resulted in frequent visits to the country and an in-depth appreciation of its history and culture. The talk will cover the landscape\, history and culture of Georgia in the Caucasus mountains including archaeology\, religious and secular architecture and the modern state of the country. Examples of Georgia’s unique polyphonic singing tradition will be played.

DESCRIPTION:Yosuke Matsumiya graduated from Cambridge and King’s College London  and is an academic medical doctor specialising in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He is currently doing research as part of his DPhil at Oxford in the Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health in collaboration with a biomedical start-up company called LUCA Science (www.luca-science.com ) which specialises in developing new therapeutic agents using mitochondria. His talk will explore the role of mitochondria in health\, diseases\, and ageing\, using simple analogies such as batteries\, as mitochondria are often identified as the powerhouse of cells.

DESCRIPTION:Paul Thomas gained his PhD in theoretical physics at Manchester and went on to research the relationship between field theories and statistical mechanics. He later changed fields completely to controlled fusion research\, which has led to him working for international agencies in the UK\, USA\, Japan\, France and Spain. His current position is as Chief Technical Adviser at Tokamak Energy Ltd. The talk will address the underpinning of Einstein’s theories of relativity\, and the observations that confirm the existence of dark matter will be described.
