DESCRIPTION:Dr Vlad Mykhnenko was born and raised in the city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. He gained his undergraduate qualifications in Ukraine and Hungary\, before moving to Darwin College\, Cambridge for his doctorate. He has taught in several universities in the UK and has published widely. He is currently associate Professor of Sustainable Urban Development and Research Fellow at St Peter’s College\, Oxford. SUMMARY:Michael Bloom - The History\, Land and People of Georgia
DESCRIPTION:Michael Bloom has been studying the Georgian polyphonic singing tradition since 1994 and co-founded a choir in London in 1999 to sing these songs. Through the choir he met his Georgian wife Eliso which resulted in frequent visits to the country and an in-depth appreciation of its history and culture. The talk will cover the landscape\, history and culture of Georgia in the Caucasus mountains including archaeology\, religious and secular architecture and the modern state of the country. Examples of Georgia’s unique polyphonic singing tradition will be played.

He is currently doing research as part of his DPhil at Oxford in the Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health in collaboration with a biomedical start-up company called LUCA Science (www.luca-science.com ) which specialises in developing new therapeutic agents using mitochondria. He later changed fields completely to controlled fusion research\, which has led to him working for international agencies in the UK\, USA\, Japan\, France and Spain. His current position is as Chief Technical Adviser at Tokamak Energy Ltd. The talk will address the underpinning of Einstein’s theories of relativity\, and the observations that confirm the existence of dark matter will be described.
