DESCRIPTION:William Lawrence spent two years teaching English in Japan (1980-1982) where he developed a great interest in the language and culture\, especially Sumo wrestling! On his return\, he went into teaching classics with posts at Solihull School (1983-1985)\, Highgate School (1985-2001) and New College School\, Oxford (2006-2011). He is now keen to promote an interest in the classical world by giving illustrated talks to schools and societies to show how the influence of Greece and Rome still surrounds us to this day. \nClassical London surveys the classical legacy all around us on the streets of London: it looks at street furniture\, shop signs\, advertisements and architecture and invites the visitor to look upwards! \n

SUMMARY:Nick Gill - Irving Berlin: Prolific Song Writer of the Jazz Age
DESCRIPTION:Nick Gill is an Oxford based classic jazz and ragtime piano player/singer who has been giving performances in all kinds of different venues for many years. His activities also include musically illustrated talks on aspects of pre-war jazz and ragtime as well as the great musicians and song writers of the era. \nProlific song writer of the Jazz Age\, Irving Berlin (1888 – 1989) was one of the most successful and ingenious of the Great American Songwriters. From humble beginnings as a singing waiter in the Bronx\, he established himself as the King of Tin Pan Alley and ensured life-long prosperity with Alexander’s Ragtime Band in 1911. He wrote many enduring classics for the Hollywood Musicals\, including Top Hat\, White Tie and Tails and Cheek to Cheek. In this talk we will look largely at his pre-World War II career. There will be numerous live musical interludes of songs displaying influences from ragtime\, jazz and the sensual art-deco elegance of the 1930s movies and shows. \n  \n  \nClassical London

SUMMARY:Julia Brockelsby - A Short History of How We Tell the Time
DESCRIPTION:Julia Brockelsby was brought up in Littlemore\, Oxford and still lives there. After a BA in Economics from Girton College Cambridge\, she had several interesting careers\, collecting lots of bits of paper along the way: ten years as a polytechnic lecturer\, then as an accountant\, and joining a global manufacturer as an IT consultant in computer architecture for international systems and banking. By 2000 she was back in Oxford as head of department in an independent sixth form college. She is currently enjoying retirement after completing an Oxford University undergraduate diploma in Archaeology in the Department of Continuing Education. She spends her time researching\, studying\, travelling\, volunteering on archaeological projects and grappling with the astonishingly rich local history of Littlemore and its neighbours. \nJulia Brockelsby’s talk explores the nature and development of methods and reasons for wanting to define time\, using observation of the world to model and predict events.

DESCRIPTION:Ray Foulk RIBA is co-author with Caroline Foulk of the historical novel\, Picasso’s Revenge. He is a renowned curator and author on French Art Deco masters and twentieth century decorative art. Ray has also written on the 1960s counterculture and rock festivals. As an award winning environmental architect\, he lives and works in Oxford\, near his four grown up children and grandchildren. \nThis talk concerns Picasso’s most powerful secret – that which triggered the art career to eclipse all others. The mystery centres on one painting\, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. Its influence as a single painting is unparalleled in the entire history of art\, yet street surveys show it remains largely unknown to the public despite there being a huge public interest in art.

DESCRIPTION:William Whyte is Professor of Social and Architectural History and a Fellow of St John’s College. He is currently serving as Senior Responsible Owner and Chair of Project Board for the Schwarzman Centre\, leading the building project\, which is due to be completed by autumn 2025. As an academic\, he writes on modern British architectural history. Beyond the University\, he is chair of the Oxford Preservation Trust and a trustee of English Heritage. \nThe Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities is Oxford University’s largest building project and the result of the largest ever gift given to the University. Bringing together seven departments\, seven libraries\, and suite of performance space – including a 500-seater concert hall\, it will transform how the humanities are studied here. It will also help change how town and gown relate to one another. Designed to be open to the public\, it represents a new sort of university building.

SUMMARY:Dr Muriel Pilkington - The Mitfords in the Cotswolds
DESCRIPTION:Muriel Pilkington read history at Oxford and then taught history in a number of schools in Hertfordshire. Her last teaching post was as head of Wycombe High School\, which is a large girls grammar school (now an academy). She was also vice-chairman of the senate at what is now Buckinghamshire New University. She took early retirement\, moved to Oxfordshire and has worked ever since as an educational consultant and writer. She also had time to take up an interest in local history and some of the talks offered are based in this county\, some are of national interest. \nThe Mitfords in the Cotswolds explains how and why a branch of a minor aristocratic family based near Morpeth in Northumberland came to have a series of homes in the Cotswolds from the early 19th century onwards. The fifth generation who lived in the area included the famous six sisters. They had an idyllic childhood in the Windrush Valley and then all went on to extraordinary lives and careers. Dr Pilkington’s talk focuses on these remarkable women. Much of the information and some of the pictures used in the talk were obtained from Rosemary Bailey (nee Mitford) who was a friend of Dr Pilkington. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Simon Keable-Elliott - Utterly Immoral\, Robert Keable\, WW1 Chaplain
DESCRIPTION:Educated at Sherborne School and Durham University\, Simon first worked in Fleet Street – as a barman – before managing and owning restaurants in London. He trained as a teacher and spent 25 years as Head of Politics and Director of Model United Nations at a secondary school in Croydon. He now works as a writer and speaker\, publishing his first book Utterly Immoral last year. Robert Keable was his grandfather. \nSimon Keable-Elliott discusses Robert Keable’s time as a chaplain during the First World War and the events that led him to write his notorious novel Simon Called Peter. He looks at the critical reception to the novel\, the attempts to ban it and the book’s great success. The author’s life was truly extraordinary. As a child he was an evangelical preacher. He won a scholarship to Cambridge\, became a priest\, worked in Zanzibar and Basutoland as a missionary and gained a reputation as a writer of devotional books. His life was changed by the war. Afterwards he left the church and later fled the country to go and live in Tahiti. He continued to write and remained an international celebrity throughout the 1920s. \n

SUMMARY:Christina Hardyment - Alyce Chaucer: Fact and Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Christina Hardyment is best known for her many non-fiction books about the home and landscape and literature\, but over the last three years she has published a trilogy of history mysteries invented around Alyce Chaucer (1404-1475)\, the granddaughter of the famous Geoffrey Chaucer\, author of the Canterbury Tales. Very little is known of Alyce’s life\, and little remains of her palace at Ewelme\, near Wallingford but her magnificent tomb and the almshouses and school she founded in Ewelme are perfectly preserved. Widowed three times by the time she was 45\, she was one of the wealthiest women of her age\, the troubled times of the Wars of the Roses. \nChristina’s first two books about Alyce\, The Serpent of Division and The Book of the Duchess have sold well and been reprinted\, and the third\, Murder will Out\, is published in October 2024

SUMMARY:Professor Raymond PierreHumbert - Exoplanets: The New Frontier
DESCRIPTION:Raymond Pierrehumbert is the Halley Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Society. He has been awarded the title of Chevelier de l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the Republic of France\, for his work on climate. \nThis lecture will introduce the audience to the new world of exoplanets — planets orbiting stars other than our own. A mere 30 years ago\, it was not really known if the solar system was the only system hosting planets in the galaxy; now we know it is almost impossible for a star to form without also forming planets. This represents a giant step on the way to answering the question of whether we are alone in the universe. This talk will be based on the author’s book Planetary Systems: A Very Short Introduction\, with updates to incorporate the latest data from the James Webb space telescope. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Katherine Bradley - No Corsets! The Rational Dress Movement Comes to Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Dr Katherine Bradley is a retired university lecturer. She taught modern European and British history at Oxford Brookes University and the Open University. She was also a tutor at Denman College (the Women’s Institute College)\, where she taught women’s history. In addition\, she founded and co-ordinated the Oxford International Women’s Festival. Over the last 35 years this has celebrated women’s achievements as well as campaigned for local women’s issues. Since her retirement she has given talks to a variety of local groups. Her talks focus and combine her long-term interests with 19th and 20th century local history and women’s history. \nHave you ever wondered how women’s clothes changed from the crinoline and bustle to the simple clothes that women wear now?  During the 19th and early 20th centuries a women’s movement developed throughout Britain\, most notably concerned with women’s suffrage. Another section of this movement were women and men concerned with dress and how this hampered women’s emancipation. This talk will examine the development of this movement\, its links with the suffrage movement\, employment and education.

SUMMARY:Stephanie Holt - Gilbert White: His Life\, Legacy\, and Impact on Natural History Today
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Holt has been working at the Natural History Museum in London for the last 10 years in the Centre for UK Nature\, following a career in conservation\, ecological planning and consultancy\, and academia. She is fascinated by British natural history\, her specialisms include bats\, amphibians\, and some invertebrate groups\, but also by the history of natural history.  She is currently studying ‘Historical Studies’ at the University of Oxford\, and will be embarking on a DPhil in October looking at natural history in the eighteenth century\, and how it influences work today. She is a fellow and trustee of the British Naturalists Association\, fellow and former trustee of the Linnean Society of London\, and associate editor for Archives of Natural History\, the journal of the Society for the History of Natural History. \nAs a natural historian Steph has always been fascinated by the history and origins of her study and science. Gilbert White is often termed the ‘father of ecology’\, and while he would not have known that term himself\, his work did pave the way for the development of ecology as a science. White himself was influenced by his time in Oxford and London\, as well as his native village of Selborne in Hampshire\, where his masterpiece The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne was written. This book is the fourth longest constantly in print book in the English language and has influenced so many who have come after him\, including notably Charles Darwin and David Attenborough. In this talk Steph will delve into White’s life\, work\, and his legacy\, and indeed how (and why) we can all follow in his footsteps as naturalists today.

SUMMARY:Jamie Williams - Excavations at Butts Piece\, Stanton Harcourt\, Oxfordshire
DESCRIPTION:Jamie Williams is a graduate of the University of Reading and has worked for Thames Valley Archaeological Services for 8 years. He has worked on many wonderful sites both as a digger and as a supervisor\, with highlights being the Roman Villa of Tackley\, a possible pre-Roman-conquest trading site in Buckinghamshire\, and\, of course\, Stanton Harcourt. \nThe excavations at Stanton Harcourt revealed vast amounts of archaeology ranging from mesolithic through to WWII activity\, with the main focus of the site being the dense Iron Age occupation in the form of ~1\,700 storage pits that was featured on Digging for Britain (Series 10\, Ep 4). The excavation also uncovered an Anglo-Saxon settlement of 20+ post-built timber buildings which might be the original village of Stanton. Finds and features from other time periods were also present\, including several Roman enclosures along the southern boundary of the pits. This site adds to the tapestry of rich and complex history of occupation uncovered around the Stanton Harcourt area. \n

His work is characterised by bright colours and organic forms and his most famous building\, the colourful Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna\, epitomizes his belief in the godlessness of the straight line and has typically uneven floors and spontaneously sprouting vegetation. \n

DESCRIPTION:Sarah has worked as a Recycling officer for five districts in Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire County Council. She has also been a waste advisor at the Sustainability Forum for the South East; contributed to the legal and practical input on the Waste Minimisation Act for the Women’s Environmental Network; chaired local authority opposition to incineration and served in various capacities for the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee. She currently works to support organisations wanting facts on waste to oppose overdevelopment of housing where there is insufficient infrastructure to deal with waste and sewage. Sarah is a member of the Oxford U3A. \nIn this talk\, Sarah will give a concise history of how household waste was dealt with until it became the responsibility of the council and why the 25 per cent recycling rate was randomly chosen. Using government statistics on waste\, she will put forward a view as to how every person can reduce their adverse environmental impact together with information about why all governments fail to address these practical measures

DESCRIPTION:Alan Lavender MBE was for twenty four years the Head Chef at Chequers\, the Prime Minister’s country residence\, and also 10 Downing Street where he worked for four Prime Ministers starting with Margaret Thatcher and retiring when Gordon Brown left office. During his time in post he cooked for most of the significant people of the era and many heads of state and royalty. He has a wealth of stories and anecdotes to tell\, and will give a glimpse of life at the table of the rich and famous. Alan was classically trained working in various London establishments before joining the RAF which led to him being selected to work at Chequers\, where he thoroughly enjoyed the unique experiences that the role of Head Chef gave him.

SUMMARY:Dr Alison Hill - Cycling in Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Alison Hill’s professional life was as a public health doctor\, having qualified in medicine from Bristol University. In the 90s she was director of public health in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. Between 2000 and 2012 she was managing director of Solutions for Public Health\, an NHS unit which provided highly specialised public health evidence and intelligence services to clients across the UK\, including government departments\, the NHS\, local authorities\, and other health bodies including NICE. From 2012 to 2015 she was Public Health England’s Deputy Chief Knowledge Officer. \nShe has been an everyday cyclist all her life. She was able to weave her interest in cycling into her professional life by working on a range of products\, such as local authority health profiles and the National Obesity Observatory\, which brought together research and data about the benefits and importance of active travel to health and wellbeing. \nThis long-standing interest in the role that cycling can play in improving health across populations\, and the contribution that public health professionals and the NHS can make to increasing the number of people cycling led to her being invited onto the board of Cycling England for its duration. \nHaving left full time paid employment Alison has two voluntary roles in the world of cycling. She is chair of the Bikeability Trust which is a charity aiming to get every child trained through the national Bikeability training scheme\, and chair of Oxford’s cycling campaign group Cyclox. She is a regular cyclist\, doing all her journeys by bike\, with or without public transport\, including cycle touring holidays.

DESCRIPTION:Becky Garnett is a DPhil researcher at Oxford University\, in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. She is researching a topic called ‘deprescribing’\, defined as the ‘stopping or withdrawing medication that a doctor or clinical pharmacist consider to be no longer appropriate or necessary’. \nShe has completed a survey project and interview study investigating the attitudes of older adults and their family/friends towards prescription medication and is now conducting a discrete choice experiment to find out what factors are important in people’s decisions relating to their medication. \n

SUMMARY:Ross King - The Competitive Sport of Fresco: Michelangelo and the Painting of the Sistine Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Ross King is the author of numerous books on Italian and French art and history. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages\, and he has won both the Governor General’s Award in Canada and the BookSense Non-Fiction Book of the Year in the United States. Born and raised in Canada\, he has lived in England since 1992. He has lectured widely in both North America and Europe\, and given lectures and guided tours in Florence\, Rome\, Milan\, Paris and Giverny. \nIn 1508\, Pope Julius II – known because of his military expeditions as the ‘Warrior Pope’ – commissioned Michelangelo to fresco the vault of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo had very limited experience of the physically and technically difficult technique of fresco\, much less on the underside of a 12\,000-square-foot surface. His reputation had been made in sculpture\, with works such as the Pietà and the David\, rather than in paint. This illustrated lecture examines the circumstances surrounding Michelangelo’s commission and how\, in the four years between 1508 and 1512\, he worked on his immense fresco in direct competition with Raphael\, his younger and prodigiously talented contemporary\, who was working on his own frescoes a few steps away in the Papal Apartments.

He has been involved in some form of chaplaincy throughout the whole time that he has been a Methodist Minister. He is currently the chaplain for the County Priory Group for St John Ambulance Wiltshire and lives in Ludgershall where he has Permission to Officiate in the parish church and conduct services on a regular basis.
