SUMMARY:Stephanie Holt - Gilbert White: His Life\, Legacy\, and Impact on Natural History Today
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Holt has been working at the Natural History Museum in London for the last 10 years in the Centre for UK Nature\, following a career in conservation\, ecological planning and consultancy\, and academia. She is fascinated by British natural history\, her specialisms include bats\, amphibians\, and some invertebrate groups\, but also by the history of natural history.  She is currently studying ‘Historical Studies’ at the University of Oxford\, and will be embarking on a DPhil in October looking at natural history in the eighteenth century\, and how it influences work today. She is a fellow and trustee of the British Naturalists Association\, fellow and former trustee of the Linnean Society of London\, and associate editor for Archives of Natural History\, the journal of the Society for the History of Natural History. \nAs a natural historian Steph has always been fascinated by the history and origins of her study and science. Gilbert White is often termed the ‘father of ecology’\, and while he would not have known that term himself\, his work did pave the way for the development of ecology as a science. White himself was influenced by his time in Oxford and London\, as well as his native village of Selborne in Hampshire\, where his masterpiece The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne was written. This book is the fourth longest constantly in print book in the English language and has influenced so many who have come after him\, including notably Charles Darwin and David Attenborough. In this talk Steph will delve into White’s life\, work\, and his legacy\, and indeed how (and why) we can all follow in his footsteps as naturalists today.

SUMMARY:Jamie Williams - Excavations at Butts Piece\, Stanton Harcourt\, Oxfordshire
DESCRIPTION:Jamie Williams is a graduate of the University of Reading and has worked for Thames Valley Archaeological Services for 8 years. He has worked on many wonderful sites both as a digger and as a supervisor\, with highlights being the Roman Villa of Tackley\, a possible pre-Roman-conquest trading site in Buckinghamshire\, and\, of course\, Stanton Harcourt. \nThe excavations at Stanton Harcourt revealed vast amounts of archaeology ranging from mesolithic through to WWII activity\, with the main focus of the site being the dense Iron Age occupation in the form of ~1\,700 storage pits that was featured on Digging for Britain (Series 10\, Ep 4). The excavation also uncovered an Anglo-Saxon settlement of 20+ post-built timber buildings which might be the original village of Stanton. Finds and features from other time periods were also present\, including several Roman enclosures along the southern boundary of the pits. This site adds to the tapestry of rich and complex history of occupation uncovered around the Stanton Harcourt area. \n

SUMMARY:Lizzy Rowe - Who Was Hundertwasser?
DESCRIPTION:Lizzy Rowe is an art historian who studied at the Courtauld Institute in London before joining English Heritage as a guidebook editor. She currently lives in Oxford where she teaches Art History in primary schools\, as well as giving guided tours and talks. \nHer lively talk on the Austrian artist and architect\, Friedrich Hundertwasser\, will give an overview of a principled life lived to the full and always with a sense of fun and a desire to make the world a more beautiful place. His work is characterised by bright colours and organic forms and his most famous building\, the colourful Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna\, epitomizes his belief in the godlessness of the straight line and has typically uneven floors and spontaneously sprouting vegetation. \n

She has worked in risk management\, sustainability and marketing\, whilst always making time for her passion of coaching young potentials in leadership practices. \nLouise holds a degree in Philosophy\, Politics & Economics from St Hilda’s College\, Oxford. \nThe Rhodes Trust is a global charity which brings together communities of unlikeminded but like-hearted people\, who are impatient to change the world. SUMMARY:Sarah Wild - Recycling - Will it ‘Save the World’? A Brief History of Waste Disposal in the UK\, and Querying if Putting ‘Waste’ in Different Coloured Dustbins is a Positive Action?
DESCRIPTION:Sarah has worked as a Recycling officer for five districts in Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire County Council. She has also been a waste advisor at the Sustainability Forum for the South East; contributed to the legal and practical input on the Waste Minimisation Act for the Women’s Environmental Network; chaired local authority opposition to incineration and served in various capacities for the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee. She currently works to support organisations wanting facts on waste to oppose overdevelopment of housing where there is insufficient infrastructure to deal with waste and sewage. Sarah is a member of the Oxford U3A. \nIn this talk\, Sarah will give a concise history of how household waste was dealt with until it became the responsibility of the council and why the 25 per cent recycling rate was randomly chosen. Using government statistics on waste\, she will put forward a view as to how every person can reduce their adverse environmental impact together with information about why all governments fail to address these practical measures

SUMMARY:Alan Lavender - Chef to Four Prime Ministers
DESCRIPTION:Alan Lavender MBE was for twenty four years the Head Chef at Chequers\, the Prime Minister’s country residence\, and also 10 Downing Street where he worked for four Prime Ministers starting with Margaret Thatcher and retiring when Gordon Brown left office. During his time in post he cooked for most of the significant people of the era and many heads of state and royalty. He has a wealth of stories and anecdotes to tell\, and will give a glimpse of life at the table of the rich and famous. Alan was classically trained working in various London establishments before joining the RAF which led to him being selected to work at Chequers\, where he thoroughly enjoyed the unique experiences that the role of Head Chef gave him.

SUMMARY:Dr Alison Hill - Cycling in Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Alison Hill’s professional life was as a public health doctor\, having qualified in medicine from Bristol University. In the 90s she was director of public health in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. Between 2000 and 2012 she was managing director of Solutions for Public Health\, an NHS unit which provided highly specialised public health evidence and intelligence services to clients across the UK\, including government departments\, the NHS\, local authorities\, and other health bodies including NICE. From 2012 to 2015 she was Public Health England’s Deputy Chief Knowledge Officer. \nShe has been an everyday cyclist all her life. She was able to weave her interest in cycling into her professional life by working on a range of products\, such as local authority health profiles and the National Obesity Observatory\, which brought together research and data about the benefits and importance of active travel to health and wellbeing. \nThis long-standing interest in the role that cycling can play in improving health across populations\, and the contribution that public health professionals and the NHS can make to increasing the number of people cycling led to her being invited onto the board of Cycling England for its duration. \nHaving left full time paid employment Alison has two voluntary roles in the world of cycling. She is chair of the Bikeability Trust which is a charity aiming to get every child trained through the national Bikeability training scheme\, and chair of Oxford’s cycling campaign group Cyclox. She is a regular cyclist\, doing all her journeys by bike\, with or without public transport\, including cycle touring holidays.

SUMMARY:Rebecca Garnett - Exploring how to Engage Patients and Their family/Friends (‘Informal Caregivers’) in Prescription Medication-Related Decisions
DESCRIPTION:Becky Garnett is a DPhil researcher at Oxford University\, in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. She is researching a topic called ‘deprescribing’\, defined as the ‘stopping or withdrawing medication that a doctor or clinical pharmacist consider to be no longer appropriate or necessary’. \nShe has completed a survey project and interview study investigating the attitudes of older adults and their family/friends towards prescription medication and is now conducting a discrete choice experiment to find out what factors are important in people’s decisions relating to their medication. \n

SUMMARY:Ross King - The Competitive Sport of Fresco: Michelangelo and the Painting of the Sistine Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Ross King is the author of numerous books on Italian and French art and history. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages\, and he has won both the Governor General’s Award in Canada and the BookSense Non-Fiction Book of the Year in the United States. Born and raised in Canada\, he has lived in England since 1992. He has lectured widely in both North America and Europe\, and given lectures and guided tours in Florence\, Rome\, Milan\, Paris and Giverny. \nIn 1508\, Pope Julius II – known because of his military expeditions as the ‘Warrior Pope’ – commissioned Michelangelo to fresco the vault of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo had very limited experience of the physically and technically difficult technique of fresco\, much less on the underside of a 12\,000-square-foot surface. His reputation had been made in sculpture\, with works such as the Pietà and the David\, rather than in paint. This illustrated lecture examines the circumstances surrounding Michelangelo’s commission and how\, in the four years between 1508 and 1512\, he worked on his immense fresco in direct competition with Raphael\, his younger and prodigiously talented contemporary\, who was working on his own frescoes a few steps away in the Papal Apartments.

SUMMARY:Reverend Dr Peter Howson - Singing the Lord’s Song in a Strange Land: Army Chaplaincy at Work
DESCRIPTION:Reverend Dr Peter Howson is a former army chaplain (1977-2002) who has written about the experience of chaplaincy in the military in a number of books and articles. He has been involved in some form of chaplaincy throughout the whole time that he has been a Methodist Minister. He is currently the chaplain for the County Priory Group for St John Ambulance Wiltshire and lives in Ludgershall where he has Permission to Officiate in the parish church and conduct services on a regular basis.

SUMMARY:Ruth Harper - The Lighthouse Violin
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Harper is a retired research physicist. She grew up on the east coast of Scotland\, then after completing her PhD she moved to southern England to pursue her career. As a teenager she played viola in the National Youth Orchestra\, and continues to play in various local amateur orchestras and chamber groups\, including the Oxford Sinfonia. Since retiring\, playing chamber music has become her main occupation! \nThe Lighthouse violin was made by Ruth’s great-grandfather Robert Clyne while stationed on some of the most remote lighthouses around the Scottish coast and played by her grandmother until it fell to pieces\, it eventually came into her care as a “bag of bits”. This is the story of its restoration\, which led to exploration of her great-grandfather’s life\, uncovering a remarkable multi-talented man who dedicated himself to a way of life now gone forever. The talk will include photos of some of the lighthouses where Robert lived and worked\, each of which adds a little adds a little piece to the jigsaw.

SUMMARY:Professor Bob Moon - Why and How England’s Schooling System Needs to Change
DESCRIPTION:Bob Moon began his career as a secondary teacher and was later Headteacher of two large urban secondary schools\, one of which was The Peers School\, now the Oxford Academy. In 1988\, he was appointed Professor of Education at The Open University with a responsibility for developing national and international programmes in teaching and teacher education. In 2018 he was awarded a CBE in recognition of his work on education in developing countries. \nMany thanks to Bob for stepping in to give this talk which was to have been given by Sir Tim Brighouse. Sir Tim very sadly died in on 15th December 2023. \n\n

SUMMARY:Dr Edward Clarke - The Cherubims and English Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Edward Clarke’s latest collection of poems is called Cherubims. A Book of Psalms was published in 2020\, and Eighteen Psalms in 2018. Clarke’s Psalter\, the documentary he presented about writing his psalm poems\, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2018. He is also the author of two books of literary criticism\, The Later Affluence of W. B. Yeats and Wallace Stevens and The Vagabond Spirit of Poetry. The Secret Mind of Art will be published in 2024. He teaches English literature and art history at various colleges and the Department for Continuing Education at Oxford University. \nIn this talk he will investigate the Cherubims as they are presented in the Bible and English poetry. In the Old Testament we find them as guards of Eden after the expulsion. Later their sphinx-like forms are carved above the mercy-seat and they re-appear as living creatures or even a living chariot to Ezekiel in exile. In the Pseudo-Dionysius they are purified to form part of the highest triad of angels. Edward will draw on this rich tradition to read poems by John Milton\, Henry Vaughan\, William Blake and others

DESCRIPTION:Dick in the last eight years has become a volunteer with The Commission and as an approved speaker delivers talks to local community groups\, history associations and schools. He is also a guide at his local CWGC cemetery at Botley in Oxford. \nAs we commemorate the many anniversaries of The Great War and The Second World War there has been much focus on remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This talk highlights the role played by those far-sighted men and women who established an organisation\, now known as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission\, so that remembrance of their sacrifice will endure in perpetuity. We will look at the architectural and physical characteristics of the cemeteries and memorials as well as the underlying principles that govern their design. \nIn addition\, we will have an introduction to the Commission’s presence in Oxfordshire and the surrounding area.

SUMMARY:Liz Wooley - Felicia Skene: Oxford Writer\, Prison Reformer and Friend to the Poor
DESCRIPTION:  \nLiz Woolley lives in Oxford and has an MSc in English Local History from the University Department for Continuing Education. She is particularly interested in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and in the lives of ordinary working citizens in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \nFelicia Skene was considered by many in Victorian Oxford to be a ‘local saint’. She devoted herself to improving the lives of the poor\, particularly in St Thomas’s\, one of the most deprived areas of the city. Skene rescued tramps and vagrants from their ’eminently unsatisfactory existence’ and girls from prostitution. The first woman in England to be officially appointed as a prison visitor\, she was a tireless advocate for prison reform\, both in the practical help she gave to inmates in Oxford’s gaols\, and through her prodigious writing. \n

SUMMARY:Matt Eade - Introducing Papua New Guinea
DESCRIPTION:Matt grew up in East Sussex and was introduced to the natural world at the age of seven when he set out to learn about birds and then butterflies\, dragonflies and orchids\, these being his main interests. Since 2011 when Matt went on his first birding trip to South Africa\, he has travelled to all seven continents and is soon to embark on an expedition from New Zealand to Japan\, with many remote islands in-between. \nPapua New Guinea is home to many hidden wildlife secrets\, especially\, Birds of Paradise\, which live in some very remote regions. Matt will talk about his 2019 expedition when he spent a month venturing to all corners of the country in search of its hidden gems\, to areas rarely visited by western travellers.
