Talks take place on Thursday afternoons, starting at 2pm, and usually take place in the Lecture Hall, Rewley House, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA. These are free for Oxford u3a members but you are welcome to attend as a guest for a donation of £5 (£2 for members of all other U3As).
Most talks are recorded on Zoom for the benefit of those Oxford u3a members who are unable to attend Rewley House.

Dr Muriel Pilkington – The Presbyterian Cavalier

Dr Muriel Pilkington is an Oxford Modern History graduate. Her career was as a history and social economics teacher in Herts and then in Bucks, where she was for 12 years headteacher of Wycombe High School, which is a large grammar school for girls. She was also vice chair of the university senate at Buckinghamshire New University and area chairman of a Secondary Heads Association. When she retired to Oxfordshire, she renewed her interest in local history and now gives a series of talks of local and general interest.
John Buchan was so much more than the author of daring-do books such as the Thirty Nine Steps. In total, he wrote over 100 books as well as innumerable articles. He was also, amongst other accomplishments, a scholar, an editor, a diplomat, an MP, a keen fisherman and walker, a leader in the Scouting movement, a great supporter of the film industry, a devout member of the Church of Scotland and Governor General of Canada. Had he not died by tragic misadventure in 1940, he would probably have been either the wartime British ambassador to the US or even one of Churchill’s war cabinet.
