Tom Brown – How Britten Brought Opera to Britain
5th October 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Tom Brown grew up in south London in an unconventionally musical household, where visitors included living classical composers Richard Rodney Bennett and Humphrey Searle. His mother, Rosemary Brown, claimed to be a musical medium in touch with dead composers. He graduated from Jesus College, Oxford with a degree in Modern Languages in 1979 and spent his working life in financial services, but has been opera-going for 50 years in four continents, having seen his first Britten performances in 1975.
The aim of this talk is to provide an insight into the operatic works of Benjamin Britten, with recorded extracts from stage or recorded performances (prospectively Peter Grimes, Billy Budd, Gloriana, the War Requiem and Death in Venice)
