Tom Wylie – Gael and Planter: Two Nations on One Land?

22nd February 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Tom Wylie was born and grew up in Belfast. Graduating from Queen’s University Belfast, he taught history and politics in the city’s secondary schools. Moving to England, he has worked as one of HM Inspectors of Education, as CEO of the National Youth Agency and has acted as an adviser to the Commons Select Committee on Education and to the governments of Northern Ireland and the Irish republic.

This talk will explore the social, economic and political origins and development of Northern Ireland and discuss such questions as Why was Ireland partitioned and could this have been avoided? Why did ‘The Troubles’ start and go on so long? Will there be a re-united Ireland in our lifetime?
